Phonecall
Jack toys with his mobile for awhile, thumb moving to and away from the number over and over. The TARDIS's coral ceiling overhead in his bedroom isn't unpleasant to look at, but you can only stare at a ceiling for so long. It may be too soon to make a call, no idea how long you're supposed to wait with these things, but he's missing the Captain and feeling impulsive, and a phonecall seems like the most reasonable option to get back in touch. No awkwardness of keeping their hands to themselves, that's important. Hard to start over and be friends if you're trying to resist the urge to pounce.

Well, what the hell, worth a call. He hits the button to call the Captain and waits to see if it's picked up.

Dora dashes away from the checkerboard and across the room to grab up the telephone. "Wotcher!" she cries cheerily.

Jack is pretty surprised when the voice he hears on the other end isn't the real Jack's, but a little girl's. He realizes after a moment-- the gleefully 'wotcher!' helps-- that it's Dora.

"Hey, Dora. It's Captain Jack."

"Oooo." She giggles. "Hello, Captain Jack." She wriggles a little.

It's good that she's in a good mood, certainly, though it throws him off a little to have her pick up the call. And he gets the strange impression of young girls lying around on the phone dishing.

Yeah, that's a strange comparison.

"Hello hello. Are you screening phonecalls?"

She giggles again and shakes her head. "Nope! Not screening it. Answering it! What are you doing?"

"You're certainly answering it, yep! I was trying to call Jack, actually, not that I mind talking to a pretty pirate princess. Is he there?"

"Of course you were calling him! This is his house. Or did you know I was here? Cause if you did then you could have been calling me because you'd know I was here except that sometimes I'm with Alex or at the cafe or out on the beach and there's not a phone box on the beach but there's one next to the eel stand with the lady who gives me cherry sweeties!" It's not clear if Dora managed to take a breath at all in that.

He's pretty impressed by her ability to sustain long rambles like that. Future rambler in the making, good stuff. "Didn't know you were there, nope-- I'd just walk over and ring Holmes' bell to see you, silly! Of course, if you weren't there, you wouldn't answer the door, but I'm just saying. You're there with him, then?"

"Or you could throw little rocks at my window like they did in that movie with the rain and the Nazis! But Nazis are Bad and Jack says they're all gone now because they fought them for being Bad and hurting people and that's why Jack is a Captain of an airplane and not of a ship!" She nods enthusiastically. "Yes! He takes care of me when Iago and Xellos are at work, Silly! CAPTAIN Silly!"

"Which movie was that? And yep, I could throw little rocks, or maybe little wrapped sweets, except I guess they might crack. Hmm. Yeah, Nazis were very bad, Dora." He could add that he fought them, too, but he doesn't quite know how to address his odd status with her. "Ahhh, right, must be lots of fun." After a moment of considering whether he should ask or not, he plows on in. "Does he know I'm on the phone?"

"The Sound of Music!" She sings to help him remember, "Do, a deer... a female deer. Ra, a drop of golden suuuun!" She breaks off into quiet giggles. "Ooh! Sweets would be nice! Or chocolates! I like Smarties!"

She looks over at Jack to see if he's paying attention and catches the very O_o expression he's making and she nods. "Yes!"

"Ahhhh. Me, a name I call myself--" He smiles to himself at her giggles. "Hmm, wouldn't want any chocolates melting if they got forgotten in the grass for awhile, but Smarties should hold up."

He's a little nervous at that; maybe Jack doesn't want to talk to him, wants Dora to keep him busy. Maybe just hasn't been able to pry the phone from Dora if he does want to talk. "Oh. Does, um, should I call him back later?"

"OOH! We should all watch it at the cafe and have a sing-a-long together! Can we? Pleeeeeease, Cap'n Jack?" She considers the wasting of chocolates in the grass. "We need a hedgehog! They'll eat chocolates!"

She's not sure if he should or not so she just answers honestly. "We're playing checkers! Do you like checkers? I'm white because Jack's not a wizard so they're not blue and pink!"

"That's... an idea!" He's not sure how many would enjoy that, but maybe they'd enjoy seeing Dora having a good time, at least. "I don't own the place, Dora, so you'd have to ask the owners. Hedgehogs, huh? I don't know much of anything about them! I know they've got those spines and their faces look like they're some kind of stuffed animal."

That could just be Dora telling him what they're up to, could be an invitation to join, really can't tell. "Checkers are very fun."

"Yes they are," says Jack, wrestling the phone away from Dora and pinning her squirming, shrilly giggling form under his other arm. "How are you doing, Captain?"

"Jack. Hi." His heart thuds a bit and he's glad he's wearing his earpiece so he won't drop the phone in surprise. Wow, missed that voice. "Hey, I'm doing pretty good, how're you? Sounds like you've got a gigglestorm on your hands."

"Yeah, as usual. I'm not even holding her upside down yet." More giggling. "Doing fine." He runs out of conversational gambits.

"Upside-down, huh? What does that do to the giggling?" He's not normally at a loss for words, but there's a bit of uncertainty in how to handle conversation with Jack at this point, considering the situation they're in. Might as well go with instinct and ramble whatever comes to mind. "Miss you, so, thought I'd call to say hey, see how things are going. Do you watch Dora a lot, then?"

"Yeah, most days now. We're helping Alex fix up his house." Dora wriggles free and slides down to get her crayons; Jack sits back onto his sofa and watches her color, abandoning the half-finished game of checkers.

"Alex's house, huh?" He's surprised both to hear that Krycek has a house and to hear that Jack's out helping with it. Not surprised that Dora is, though, since Dora adores Krycek, so he has to wonder if Dora dragged Jack into it or if Jack actually went in on his own. "Dora roped the two of us into playing with her the other night, actually. Space pirates. She got pretty upset when her Teddy got accidentally left inside, though, but sounds like I've got some play dates with her in my future, since the TARDIS is parked out in Holmes' garden."

"Yeah, Teddy goes everywhere." Teddy is, in fact, currently next to his door. "That's where you're staying now?" He's seized with loneliness suddenly, remembering the closeness of waking up next to Jack, kissing him good morning, and he swallows.

"Teddy's definitely important." He's not sure if he should mention why he suspects the bear is so significant-- Dora's father, son... but she's a child now, that's some kind of subconscious connection if it's there, not an active part of her child mind. "Mmmhmm. The TARDIS kept my old belongings, actually, so I'm in the room I used to live in when I was traveling with the Doctor. It's kind of surreal sometimes." He was certainly different then, and not just in his state of being. He closes his eyes and settles back onto his bed.

"Does Teddy get the upside-down treatment, too?" He draws in a soft breath, and offers, "If you'd ever like a look inside, I'd be happy to give you the tour. It's a little rearranged from how it was when I knew it, but I can show you around. If you're interested."
